Shuster Announces Assistance Grants For First Responders

Two 9th District Organizations Receive Funding From DHS

Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster announced today that an emergency medical service unit in Blair County and a volunteer fire department in Fayette County have received federal grant money for operations and safety equipment.  Altoona Mobile Emergency Department (AMED) Authority, headquartered in Altoona, was awarded $75,200, and the Markleysburg Henry-Clay Volunteer Fire Department received $42,370 through the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.

"First responder organizations operate on extremely tight budgets.  I am pleased that DHS recognizes their need for funds," said Shuster, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Emergency Management. "Emergency medical personnel and firefighters are among the most dedicated individuals in our communities.  They sacrifice their time and often risk their own lives to save and protect us.  They deserve to have the best equipment available.”

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program awards grants to firefighters, emergency response personnel and first responders throughout the nation to enhance response capabilities and to more effectively protect the health and safety of first responders and the citizens in their communities.  AFG grants provide resources for training, first responder health and safety programs, and response equipment and vehicles.  Since 2001, a total of $2.4 billion in grants have been awarded through the AFG program.
