NEW AIRPACKS ON THE WAY TO BAKERSVILLE FIRE

Shuster Helps Secure Federal Funding for Local Fire Company

Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster announced today funding for a fire department in Somerset County.  The Bakersville Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) will receive federal money for operations and safety equipment, such as new gear and airpacks.

“This funding is a huge relief and will be very helpful for our firefighters,” said Fire Chief Willy Walker.

Bakersville VFD will receive $109,724 and it will mostly be used to purchase new airpacks – the breathing apparatus that aids firefighters in smoke-filled buildings.  The new airpacks will replace the 14-year-old equipment they are currently using.

“These local men and women serve our communities by volunteering their time and efforts, and they risk their lives,” said Shuster who is chairman of the Emergency Management Subcommittee in Congress.  “Today our firefighters are the first line of defense.  These new airpacks are overdue and they will help protect these men and women.”

The funding is administered through the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.  This program awards one-year grants directly to fire departments to support the services they deliver.  This year is the first time the program has been opened up to all emergency preparedness officials, including ambulance services.
