SHUSTER SECURES CRITICAL COMMUNICATIONS FUNDS FOR BEDFORD COUNTY

Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster announced today funding he secured for Bedford County emergency communications.  The funding is made available through the Law Enforcement Technologies and Interoperable Communications Program and was included in the final legislation that passed last night.

“Bedford County officials have an extensive area of jurisdiction including local pockets that are difficult to encompass no matter what type of communications system is used,” said Shuster, chairman of the Emergency Management Subcommittee in Congress.  “But this funding provides much-needed support to first responders and law enforcement trying to keep up-to-date with critical time-sensitive information that can save lives.”

Shuster secured $150,000 for Bedford County to upgrade its emergency communications.  The new system will assist state and local law enforcement agencies in Bedford County with investigating, responding to and preventing crimes, and gathering information.  Overall the funding is geared toward increasing interoperability.

The funding was included in the final passage of the Commerce Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2006.  The bill is expected to pass the Senate soon and will then be sent to President Bush for his signature.
