| Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster announced that Somerset and Mifflin Counties will receive the Drug-Free Communities (DFC) grants for the Mifflin County Communities that Care in Lewistown and the Somerset County Board of Family Services in Somerset. Only 107 new grant recipients across the county were announced and Pennsylvania’s Ninth Congressional District boasts two of the new recipients. The DFC grants were awarded to centers dedicated to preventing and treating drug and alcohol abuse among youth.
“I am pleased to announce that Pennsylvania’s Ninth Congressional District is the recipient of two awards out of only107 that were given out across the country,” said Shuster. “These centers have proven that they are firmly committed to fighting drug and alcohol abuse among our youth.”
Today, 700,000 fewer youths are using drugs than in 2001, according to Jim Walters, Director of the National Drug Control Policy. He credits federal funded programs, such as the Mifflin County Communities that Care in Lewistown and the Somerset County Board of Family Services in Somerset for this success.
“This grant money will allow the people of Somerset and Mifflin Counties to operate the programs that work best for their communities,” said Shuster.
The Mifflin County Communities that Care and the Somerset County Board of Family Services will receive $100,000 each. |
