Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster met today with Everett Area School District officials in his Capitol Hill office to recognize their Blue Ribbon Award of Excellence. Shawn Kovac, principal, and Mike Kline, teacher, are in Washington today to receive the award from the U.S. Department of Education for Everett Elementary School.
“This is not something that is easy to win,” said Shuster. “There are only about 295 schools across the country receiving this. The hard work and commitment of the teachers, students, administrators and parents in Everett have paid off for the area and it’s being noticed nation-wide. I congratulate them for this remarkable achievement.”
The U.S. Department of Education selects schools for the Blue Ribbon Award of Excellence based on one of three criteria: 1) schools with at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds dramatically improve student performance on state tests, 2) schools whose students, regardless of background, achieve in the top 10 percent on their state tests, or 3) private schools that achieve in the top 10 percent in the nation.
Today’s meeting with Congressman Shuster was in recognition of the school’s extraordinary accomplishment, which is part of the focus on progress under No Child Left Behind.
