SHUSTER, MURTHA FLIGHT 93 BILL TO PASS CONGRESS

Permanent Memorial for the U.S. Capitol Planned

Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster’s legislation calling for a permanent memorial in the U.S. Capitol honoring the crew and passengers aboard Flight 93 is expected to pass the House of Representatives this evening.  The legislation has already passed the Senate, where it was sponsored by Senators Kent Conrad of North Dakota and Rick Santorum.

“As years go by we must make sure the heroic actions of the people aboard Flight 93 are remembered,” said Shuster.  “Most intelligence reports suggest this flight was heading to the U.S. Capitol and that their brave response preserved our nation’s symbol of freedom and democracy to the world.”

The measure is cosponsored by Congressman John Murtha (PA-12), who worked together with Shuster to ensure its passage.  In July, Shuster’s subcommittee, which has jurisdiction over public buildings, held a hearing with the families of the passengers, residents of Shanksville and a representative from the Architect of the Capitol.

This memorial is in addition to the already planned commemoration in Shanksville, which was unveiled last week in Washington.  A committee will be organized, including Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, to select an appropriate memorial for the U.S. Capitol.

“This committee will consider a variety of options for the memorial,” said Shuster.  “During the hearing with the families a few options were discussed, but nothing is finalized yet.”

Congressman Shuster is chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management.
