Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster announced today federal funding for the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Borough of Chambersburg Police Department. The grant, from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, will go toward updating their radio systems and will greatly enhance the communication abilities of emergency officials.
“Public safety and the ability for a swift and coordinated emergency response to any kind of event continue to drive our agenda and we thank Congressman Shuster for helping us achieve our goals,” said Franklin County Commissioner Chair G. Warren Elliott.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Borough of Chambersburg Police Department will receive $39,102. The funding is allocated for the purchase of new radio equipment, including a new base unit, which will be compatible with Franklin County emergency operations. The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program is administered through the Department of Justice under fiscal year 2005 appropriations supporting state and local law enforcement in crime control prevention. The funding is based upon local needs and has flexibility to suit communities.
“Updated and compatible radio equipment is vital in allowing emergency responders to successfully complete their job,” said Shuster, who is chairman of the Emergency Management Subcommittee in Congress. “This new equipment will greatly increase the effectiveness of local law enforcement and allow for greater communication between all Franklin County emergency services.” |
