Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster applauded today’s passage of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (H.R. 6), which will now go to the president’s desk and is expected to become law. The legislation, which has been considered and reconsidered for four years, puts America on a path for increased energy independence while encouraging fuel efficiency.
“There are basically two ways to solve our energy problems. The first is exploring for more domestic sources and the other is moving America toward more fuel efficient options, such as hybrid cars,” said Shuster. “The bill is so significant because it encompasses nearly every aspect of energy production and consumption.”
The Energy Policy Act passed the House by 275-156 and encourages the use of natural gas and clean burning coal through tax credits and addresses rising gas prices. Tax incentives for renewable energy, such as wind and hydropower, were extended for two years because they have reduced our reliance on fossil fuels.
H.R. 6 establishes a tax credit for the purchase of hybrid and other alternative power vehicles, a move that many consider key to increasing the use of these fuel-efficient, energy-friendly automobiles. The legislation also includes a 10 percent personal tax credit for families who make energy efficient improvements to existing homes.
“This bill moves America into the 21st Century by encouraging people and businesses to make purchases that consider energy efficiency, which is part of the strategy to reduce our reliance on oil from the Middle East,” said Shuster. |
