Shuster Applauds Decision to Level the Playing Field

Blair and Huntingdon County Facilities to Keep Hundreds of Jobs

Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster applauds the recent decision by the International Trade Commission (ITC) to level the playing field for manufacturers, saving hundreds of jobs in Blair and Huntingdon Counties. Shuster testified before the ITC in July of this year on behalf of two Ninth District employers, MeadWestvaco in Huntingdon County and Roaring Spring Paper Products in Blair County. The hearings found that paper manufacturers in China, India and Indonesia were illegally flooding the U.S. market with paper products and threatening to put two major Ninth Congressional District employers out of business. The two plants employ up to 650 people in the area.

“I’m glad that my testimony could help MeadWestvaco and Roaring Springs Paper Products,” said Shuster. “These two plants provide hundreds of good jobs in the Ninth District and are critical to our local economy. I applaud the ITC’s decision to level the playing field and take action against unfair trade practices injuring U.S. companies.”

Perry Smith, Plant Manager for MeadWestvaco’s facility in Blair County also applauds the ITC decision. "I wanted to personally thank Congressman Shuster for testifying on behalf of MeadWestvaco and for being a strong supporter of our employees throughout this process," said Smith. "His help and testimony were a key part of our victory."
