LETTERKENNY ARMY DEPOT SHIPPING FACILITY TO BE UPGRADED

Shuster, Santorum Announce Funding for Letterkenny Renovations

Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster and Senator Rick Santorum announced funding today in the Military Quality of Life Appropriations Act for Letterkenny Army Depot Ammunitions Center.  A joint effort by the Congressional Delegation secured the funds in the Senate and in the House because this facility needs renovations and is more than sixty years old.  The House approved the final version today and it included federal funds for Letterkenny to build a new shipping facility because Shuster and Santorum fought to retain it throughout the process.

“Since I first joined the Senate, I have had a special affinity with the depot and its workforce.  The military leaders and civilian workers at Letterkenny have impressed me with their ingenuity, resiliency, and work ethic.  This most recent BRAC round confirmed the importance of the depot to meeting our national security requirements.  This military construction project will enable the depot to better operate and meet the needs of the men and women who wear our country’s uniform and who are in harm’s way,” said Senator Santorum.

“This funding will provide the resources necessary for upgrades and maintenance to a facility that was built in the 1940s,” said Shuster, a member of the Armed Services Committee.  “The funding was secured on the Senate side and we worked to make sure it was included on the House side.  Having that type of teamwork in the delegation is essential and by working together we were able to make sure the funding would be there for Letterkenny.”

The military construction appropriation for Letterkenny is $6.3 million.  The less-than-truckload facility handles incoming orders that require special attention, such as ammunition, and is responsible for shipping and receiving orders that come in a range of sizes.  There are multiple storage bays as well and the renovations will upgrade the entire facility.

The funding was included in the Military Quality of Life Appropriations Act that passed the House of Representatives today.
