Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster today expressed encouragement at news of Iraqi security forces taking the fight to the enemy and winning on the battlefield.
“For Iraq to become a stable democracy, the Iraqi people must stand up and defend their nation against the terrorists who seek to destroy it. American forces cannot win this battle alone, nor should they,” Shuster said. “Today’s report that the Iraqi military killed 80 insurgents and captured 50 in Anbar province is an encouraging sign that the Iraqi military is stepping up to the challenge.”
According to CNN and wire reports, Iraqi police and security forces engaged al-Qaeda terrorists south of Falluja. It is important to note that no American or coalition forces took part in the battle. Instead, according to reports, local residents requested support from the Iraqi military when al-Qaeda terrorists began operating in the area. According to an Iraqi Interior Ministry spokesman, foreign fighters were among the terrorists killed in the fighting.
“For the president’s troop increase to work, American reinforcements must be used to assist Iraqi military in securing their nation. We should not act as the tip of the spear,” Shuster added. “The Iraqi government and its military will face a rigorous litmus test in showing that they can take control of the situation. Today’s reports indicate that the Iraqis are eagerly taking on the enemy so we don’t have to. I hope this trend continues.” |
