Shuster Emphasizes Continued Success of Medicare Prescription Drug Plan in Pennsylvania

New Data Shows More Plans with Coverage in the Gap

Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster touted the success of Medicare Part D after the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the details of an improved prescription drug plan for seniors for next year. The average monthly premium for 2007 will remain at $24 if seniors stay with the same drug plan.

“Competition in the market place continues to create real savings for seniors in central and western Pennsylvania,” said Shuster. “Ninety-three percent of eligible seniors in the Ninth Congressional District have Medicare Part D prescription coverage, which is above the state average. Studies show that 80% of Medicare beneficiaries are satisfied with their current coverage and drug plans and that echoes what I’ve heard from seniors here at home. I’m pleased that there are affordable, high-quality plans available to our seniors.”

In Pennsylvania, the lowest premium plan costs $14.80 and four other plans are less than $20 a month.  Low-income beneficiaries will have a range of options available for comprehensive coverage. Beneficiaries will be able to choose from 30 plans that offer enhanced benefits and services, such as coverage in the gap and little or no deductible.

For seniors who wish to change plans or enter the program, the opportunity to enroll in a lower cost or more comprehensive plan begins on November 15, 2006. Beneficiaries who want to consider other options for their drug plans should call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
