Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster announced today that six students from the Ninth District will attend a military service academy next year. The application and selection process is extremely competitive, but these students have met rigorous demands and accepted an appointment at one of our prestigious military academies, which include the United States Military Academy at West Point, the United States Air Force Academy and the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis.
"These young men have worked hard to receive such an honorable appointment, and we should be proud to have them represent central and western Pennsylvania at America’s esteemed military institutions," said Shuster, a member of the Armed Services Committee. "They will now serve their country in the Army, Navy and Air Force. Congratulations to all of the students selected."
Jonathan Stafford and Terrence Shields, both from Carlisle in Cumberland County will begin at the United States Military Academy at West Point next year. Michael Angstadt of Shippensburg, Cumberland County, and Ross Gioiosa of Altoona, Blair County, will attend the United States Air Force Academy. Timothy Cousins of Huntingdon and Matthew Harbaugh from Garrett in Somerset County will attend the United States Naval Academy.
The selection process for a military service academy begins by submitting an application to Congressman Shuster’s office. The applicants go through an extensive interview process covering topics such as academics, community service, leadership abilities and more. If nominated by Congressman Shuster, the application is submitted to the school of the student’s choice and the academy makes the final appointment decision.
