Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster is pleased to announce that three fire departments in the 9th District have been awarded grants from the Department of Homeland Security to help them better protect the communities they serve. The grants were awarded by the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.
“I am happy to see that these fire companies received the federal assistance they need to improve their service to the people of the district,” Shuster said. “Before this grant program was started, there was no dedicated federal assistance offered to our first responders. This peer-reviewed grant program is essential for our volunteer firefighters to get the training and equipment they need to keep our communities safe,” Shuster added.
The three fire companies to receive the grants include:
- Spangler Fire Company in Cambria County: $264,908 for a new vehicle;
- Orbisonia-Rockhill Volunteer Fire Company in Huntingdon County: $171,000 for a new vehicle;
- Addison Community Volunteer Fire Department in Somerset County: $55,052 for operations and safety equipment.
“Our volunteer fire fighters are our first line of defense in times of emergency,” Shuster said. “These firefighters are our friends and our neighbors. I am pleased to see these federal funds go back into our communities to better protect those who protect us each and every day.”
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFGP) awards one-year grants directly to fire departments to support the nation's firefighters and the services they deliver. In Fiscal Year 2005, Congress reauthorized the grant program through 2010. The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of State and Local Government Coordination and Preparedness (SLGCP) administers the program, in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration. |
