Shuster Applauds Speedy Trial and Conviction of Miguel Padilla

Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster applauds the Blair County Court and the jury for a speedy trial in finding Manuel Padilla guilty of last year’s triple murder in Altoona.

“The speedy trial and conviction of Padilla will start to give closure to the families and friends of the victims,” said Shuster. “These vicious killings are a terrible tragedy, and the fact that Padilla wasn’t supposed to be here at all just adds insult to injury. We need close the loopholes that allow illegal aliens to remain in the United States, especially after prior arrests.”

Miguel Padilla, an illegal immigrant, was picked up by the authorities on two separate occasions and the authorities failed to deport him before he committed these crimes.

In the last year, Shuster has supported legislation that will help secure the nation’s borders and keep Americans safe. Shuster has helped to pass the REAL ID Act, which keeps illegal immigrants from getting state-issued ID’s. He also supported the Border Protection bill, which increased border security and will prevent people from crossing the border into this country illegally. Additionally, Shuster supported President Bush’s decision to send National Guard troops to the Mexican border, which has reduced illegal crossings by 25% since last year, according to the U.S. Border Patrol.
