| Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster issued the following statement today after President Bush signed the Military Commissions Act into law:
“President Bush is right in signing this important legislation today that is vital to our success in the Global War on Terror,” said Congressman Bill Shuster. “The Military Commissions Act allows us to prosecute terrorists, like al-Qaeda operative and alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, while protecting our intelligence capabilities and troops in the field. I am disappointed that 162 Democrats in the House chose to put politics ahead of our national security by opposing this legislation. They are wrong to support giving special treatment to radicals that sought to kill Americans.”
“This program has been one of the most successful intelligence efforts in American history. We must provide every tool available to our military and intelligence operations to protect the American people. I find it inexcusable that Democrats can justify voting against legislation that focuses on saving American lives.”
“The Military Commissions Act allows the CIA to continue its program for questioning key terrorist leaders, and provides for the prosecution of captured terrorists for war crimes through full and fair trials. The United States intelligence community believes al-Qaeda and its allies would have succeeded in attacking us again if not for this program. The information obtained from terrorists in our custody has helped in the capture or questioning of nearly every senior al-Qaeda member or associate detained by the United States and our allies since this program began.” |
