Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, responds to President Bush’s proposal to authorize military commissions to try suspected terrorists for war crimes.
“Congress must take action to authorize military commissions to try suspected terrorists for war crimes,” said Shuster. “These commissions need to be established in a way that protects our national security and ensures a full and fair trial for the accused, while also preserving our ability to question key terrorist leaders and operatives. Through our aggressive prosecution of the War on Terror, we have captured terrorists who have been in the inner circle of Al-Qaeda, and in the last five years information obtained from terrorist detainees has become a vital part of the US counterterrorism efforts. Terrorist detainees have provided valuable information that has saved innocent lives in the US and around the world. We are closely examining and carefully considering the Administration’s plan and it is vital to authorize the most effective program available to prosecute terrorists and protect innocent lives.” |
