SHUSTER REACTS TO RATHER’S RETIREMENT

Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster released the following statement regarding the sudden retirement of Dan Rather from CBS Evening News:

“Dan Rather has been a legend in media for more than a quarter of a century to many people around the world, but not to me.  For the entirety of his career, Rather allowed his liberal bias to shape the news rather than report it.  After his latest attempt to discredit President Bush’s honorable service in the Air National Guard, the American public has had enough.”

“Today, we are all surprised by his retirement, but if you think about it – he challenged a sitting President’s military record for political and personal gain.  He fabricated documents to make it more believable and then denied, denied, denied.  I believe it is clear to most Americans, that truth, morals and values matter most.  The impact of Rather’s bias agenda on his job at CBS should, at least I hope, bring integrity back to the national media.  Sometimes, it takes a shock like this to reform systems that are out of whack.”
