Shuster Votes to Protect Religious Freedom & American Values

Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster voted in favor of bill that promotes religious freedoms and protects American values. The Public Expression of Religion Act (H.R. 2679) makes it harder to sue the government for public expressions of religion. The bill passed in the House of Representatives today by a vote of 244 to 173.

“The Constitution gives Americans freedom of religion, not freedom from religion,” said Shuster. “This country was founded on a Christian values system and that will always be a part of our national identity. America is, and always will be, one nation under God.”

The bill prevents a potential plaintiff from forcing the government to pay for his or her legal fees when they bring a lawsuit that challenges public expressions of religion. This refers to suits challenging religious images or references on veteran’s memorials, federal buildings and city seals. Typical lawsuits covered in this legislation are aimed at doing away with references to religion or God in our nation’s seal or the Pledge of Allegiance, symbols that are the bedrock of our nation’s values.
