SHUSTER MEETS WITH U.S. SECRETARY OF EDUCATION

Continued Push in Math and Science Highlighted by Spellings

Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster met with U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings this morning to discuss the progress our students are making in schools across the country and in Pennsylvania. Secretary Spellings was on Capitol Hill today to discuss, among other issues, the best ways to move our children forward in math and science education.

"Across the country and throughout central and western Pennsylvania, we have seen more accountability in the classroom, which is a good thing, but we need to make more progress in math and science," said Shuster, who has two children in public school. "As a parent, I know of the challenges our schools are facing and we need to make sure our teachers have the tools they need to educate our children."

Today Spellings spoke to members of Congress on a wide-range of issues, including special education, local control versus federal policies, accountability for every student, and more. Promoting math and science will continue to be a key issue when No Child Left Behind is reauthorized. Spellings highlighted that, when compared to schools around the world, our children remain competitive in math and science until about fourth or fifth grade. She emphasized the need to further advance these subjects between fifth grade and ninth grade to keep America competitive in these fields.

Secretary Spellings, or one of her Assistant Secretaries, may be able to visit the Ninth Congressional District to hear feedback from teachers, principals and students in central and western Pennsylvania. Congressman Shuster’s office will continue working to set this up for the end of this year.
