Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster recited a pledge today to uphold and honor the Constitution of the United States and with that was sworn in for his third session of Congress. On the floor of the House of Representatives, Shuster and his colleagues held up their right hands and said together, Republican and Democrat, their oath to office.
"It is a privilege to serve in Congress, and an even greater privilege for me to serve the constituents of central and western Pennsylvania, which is home to my family," said Representative Shuster. "The transition of power in America is truly a remarkable event - there is no bloodshed and no violence. It is truly a model to the world that shows how great democracy is."
At 12 p.m. today all members and members-elect went to the house floor together for the first time as the 109th Congress. After being sworn in, they voted to re-elect Denis Hastert for his fourth consecutive term as Speaker of the House, and began preparing for the coming session.
"I am excited to see the President’s proposals for the next Congress," said Congressman Shuster. "We must continue to protect the American people by taking the fight to our enemies, but I hope to also work on domestic issues - strengthening our borders, reforming and personalizing social security, and overhauling the tax code to make it simpler and more user friendly."
The remainder of the week will include a variety of ceremonies and preparations for the 109th Congress, as the Presidential Inauguration approaches on January 20th. |
