LANGEVIN NAMED TO HOUSE ARMED SERVICES COMMITTEE

(Washington, D.C.)–Congressman Jim Langevin today announced that he has been appointed to the U.S. House Armed Services Committee. Upon his election to Congress, Langevin advocated for this appointment, given the importance of the Defense Industry to the economic health of Rhode Island.

"Thousands of Rhode Islanders proudly serve in our armed forces," said Congressman Langevin. "One issue of great concern to me is the struggling of our men and women in uniform to adequately provide for their families. I will make every effort to advocate for an increased standard of living for our military personnel so that no one in our armed forces, protecting our nation, is forced to resort to food stamps to provide for themselves and their families."

"Furthermore, while Rhode Island is rich in natural beauty with picturesque coast lines and beaches, the state also provides critical defense manufacturing services for the United States Military," said Congressman Langevin. "The United States is one of the strongest military powers in the global community and we must continue to maintain the infrastructure system that supports our forces. This policy provides needed military resources for our men and women in uniform and jobs for hundreds of Rhode Island’s working families."

The Armed Services Committee is responsible for the operating budget of the Department of Defense and considers legislation in the areas of U.S. National Security and U.S. Interests; Acquisition Reform; Base Closure and Realignment; Environmental Programs; Force Readiness; shoring up the Industrial and Technological Base; Intelligence operations; Merchant Marines; Military Applications of Nuclear Energy; Military Modernization; Morale, Welfare and Recreation Programs; and National Military Strategy and Force Structure.
