HOUSE APPROVES HALL RESOLUTION

DESIGNATING BOY SCOUTS DAY

WASHINGTON, D.C. ...The House of Representatives today approved by voice vote a resolution authored by Congressman Ralph Hall (TX/4th) expressing support for the designation of February 8, 2010, as “Boy Scouts of America Day” in honor of the scouting organization’s 100th anniversary.

Hall introduced the resolution along with 68 original co-sponsors.  Hall credited John Jarvis of Texarkana, TX, a Scout leader with the Caddo Area Council and a member of Troop 16, for bringing the idea to his attention and working with Hall and the national organization to recognize this important milestone in the history of Boy Scouts of America.

“I can think of no other organization that has done more to develop strong character and core American values than the Boy Scouts of America,” Hall said.  “Boy Scouts provides instruction on American social, economic and governmental systems and inspires young men to take pride in their American heritage and to understand our nation’s role in the world.”

Hall noted that Boy Scouts encourages its members to be active citizens in their communities, and as a result, Scouts often become effective leaders at the local, state and national levels.  Over the years, the organization has grown from its original 34 Scouts to a strong following that exceeds 111 million members.  Earlier this year the 2 millionth Eagle Scout was awarded to a young man from Minnesota.

“One of the great privileges of serving as Congressman of the Fourth Congressional District has been to recognize Scouts and present flags flown over the Capitol to hundreds who have acquired the rank of Eagle Scout,” Hall said.  “Members of Boy Scouts are some of the best and brightest young people in America, and I am pleased that the House of Representatives passed this resolution to recognize the important work of this organization on behalf of America’s young men.”
