HOUSE APPROVES REPUBLICAN MEASURE

COMMENDING GENERAL PETRAEUS

WASHINGTON, D.C. ...Today the House of Representatives passed overwhelmingly a Republican Motion to Recommit commending General David Petraeus, the Commander of the Multi-National Forces in Iraq, and condemning the personal attacks made by the advocacy group MoveOn.org against General Petraeus.  The measure also continues  funding of the Federal government from October 1, the beginning of the 2008 Fiscal Year, through November 16 to give the House and Senate more time to consider individual appropriations bills.

“Republican leadership worked hard to secure a vote in support of General Petraeus, and I am pleased that they prevailed,” Hall said.  “The Senate had already voted to condemn the personal attacks by the MoveOn organization – and it was past time for the House to follow suit.”

“General Petraeus is providing outstanding leadership in a difficult and complex war effort in Iraq.  I was privileged to have a couple of hours with the General on a recent trip to Iraq,” Hall said.  “He has the respect of the majority of the Congress on both sides of the political aisle, and I believe this vote signals that we will not tolerate personal attacks on our military leaders and members of the Armed Forces.”

The Motion to Recommit recognizes the service and personal sacrifices made by General Petraeus and his family and other members of the Armed Forces and their families.  It commits to judge the merits of the sworn testimony of General Petraeus without prejudice or personal bias, including refraining from unwarranted personal attacks.  It condemns in the “strongest possible terms” the personal attacks made by MoveOn “impugning the integrity and professionalism” of General Petraeus.

The measure also pledges to debate any supplemental funding request or policy decisions regarding the war in Iraq “with the solemn respect and the commitment to intellectual integrity that the sacrifices of these members of the Armed Forces and civilian personnel deserve.”
