Hensarling Honors Jarvis Christian College

WASHINGTON - Highlighting the importance of providing educational opportunity to rural Texans, today U.S. Congressman Jeb Hensarling (TX-5) honored Jarvis Christian College (JCC), a 92-year-old liberal arts college located in Hawkins, Texas.  During a visit to the college, Hensarling presented JCC President, Dr. Sebetha Jenkins, with a Congressional certificate recognizing the institution’s contribution to higher education.

“Education is the foundation for the future of our nation,” said Congressman Hensarling.  “Jarvis is a great example of an institution that is helping young people realize their dreams by arming them with the skills, knowledge and values they need to succeed in life.”

Since its founding in 1912, JCC has provided students with a liberal arts education, professional preparation and guidance in Christian living. The college is a private, four-year, historically black, fully accredited, co-educational institution.

“I am pleased to see the wonderful Christian education that Jarvis College is providing our young people,” said Hensarling.  “The college, its administrators and students have a lot to be proud of.”

Major J.J. Jarvis, who established the school in conjunction with the Christian Women’s Board of Missions, said long ago that the purpose of the college will be to “educate head, heart and hand and to produce useful citizens and earnest Christians.”  Today, that statement still remains a key part of school’s mission.

In 2002, U.S. News and World Report listed JCC as one of the best small schools in America for the second consecutive year.  The average enrollment is roughly 550 students per semester.
