RSC Launches American Taxpayer Bill of Rights
Accountability, efficiency, transparency urged
as RSC members junk  tax code at press conference

Washington D.C.Today, the fiscally responsible Republican Study Committee (RSC), a group of over 100 House conservatives, launched the American Taxpayer Bill of Rights at a press conference in the Capitol.  The news event, during which Members tossed volume upon volume of the 9,000,000+ word tax code into the trash, marked the kickoff of a grassroots effort to ensure that leaders in Washington never forget that tax money belongs to the taxpayers, not the government.  Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC), Chairman of the Republican Steering Committee in the Senate, joined his House counterparts at the Capitol.

“We believe that taxpayers and families across America will embrace these four fundamental rights that every taxpayer should have,” said RSC Chairman Jeb Hensarling. “The group of candidates vying to be the next Republican nominee for President would be wise to adopt the four core rights of the American Taxpayer Bill of Rights.  There are many lessons of the last election – a big one is that people want Republicans to act like Republicans.”

The RSC’s American Taxpayer Bill of Rights (attached) establishes four basic rights to ensure that the taxpayers across America receive a more efficient and accountable government.  First, taxpayers have a right to have a federal government that does not grow beyond their ability to pay for it.  Second, taxpayers have a right to receive back each dollar that they entrust to the government for their retirement.  Next, taxpayers have a right to expect the government to balance the budget without having their taxes raised.  Finally, taxpayers have a right to a simple, fair tax code that they can understand.

“There is no denying that Washington has a spending problem.  In thirty-four of the last thirty-eight years, the federal government has spent more money than it has taken in,” said RSC Budget and Spending Taskforce Chairman John Campbell.  “Americans deserve a system that is based on responsible budgeting, smart decision making and more transparency.  The American Taxpayer Bill of Rights will create a foundation for an efficient and common sense budget process.”

“We know that the American people are frustrated with what they have seen coming from Washington over the past couple of years,” said RSC Communications Chair Marsha Blackburn.  “They are in search of solutions. Those of us in the fiscally responsible RSC all agree on these principles, and the American Taxpayer Bill of Rights provides the framework in which to find solutions.”

“This is the message that the Republican Study Committee will take across the country, district to district, coast to coast in order to empower debate in the halls of Congress,” added Hensarling.
