Washington D.C.- As the House Committee on the Budget Committee marked-up the FY2008 Budget Resolution, in which the Democrat majority sanctions at least a $392.5 billion tax increase (the largest tax increase in American history), Republicans gathered just outside on the Cannon Office Building Terrace to rally around Republican Study Committee’s American Taxpayer Bill of Rights.
Members from the Republican Study Committee (RSC) joined FreedomWorks Chairman Dick Armey, Senator Jim DeMint, and grassroots activists from across the country to show support for the common-sense principles of the RSC effort to protect American taxpayers. “Taxpayers and families across America are embracing the four fundamental rights spelled out by the RSC,” said Chairman Jeb Hensarling. “It pure irony that as House Democrats introduced the largest budget in history, that includes the largest tax increase in history, Republicans joined with Americans from across the country to embrace a pro-taxpayer agenda. The contrast couldn’t be any clearer.”
In addition to the massive tax increase levied by the Democrat Budget, Chairman Spratt’s mark proposes no changes to slow the exploding growth of entitlements that would result in deficit reduction, and it increases non-defense discretionary spending by $23 billion for FY 2008 (compared to the President's increase of $8.8 billion).
“Speaker Pelosi and the Democrat majority are actively working to raise taxes on hard working American families,” said Hensarling. “We all knew that Democrats were eager to tax and spend, but we didn’t expect to see such a massive tax increase so quickly. This will break the backs of American families, forcing them to ante up an additional $2000 each year to Washington. That has a real effect on Americans, who would be forced to work an extra 2 weeks each year under the Democrat plan just to pay the tax collector.”
