Washington D.C.- Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), Chairman of the Republican Study Committee, issued the following statement after the House passed two amendments to the Emergency Iraq War Supplemental legislation, H.R. 2206: (One amendment provides funding for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, the other includes billions of dollars in non-emergency spending and a minimum wage increase).
“Today, Democrats made clear that they are more interested in supporting pork than supporting our troops. By standing together in support of our troops, Republicans will ensure that they receive the resources they need in order to contain the radical Islamists they face.
“By placing some legitimate spending alongside loads of pork in an emergency bill, Democrats deceptively avoid their own budget resolution and create more headroom for unnecessary spending. Wasteful spending should never be used to confuse the issue of supporting our troops and providing the Military with the funds needed to accomplish their mission.
“Democrats retreated from demanding a surrender date and instead decided that the Iraq-funding bill should contain billions in pork and unrelated spending as well as a minimum wage increase. I will vote for our troops and against the funding that was not requested by the President and is inappropriately included in an emergency spending bill. Democrats will do the opposite.”
