Best Southwest Chamber welcomes Congressman Marchant
August 12, 2008

DESOTO, TX - U.S. Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24) gave a legislative policy update Aug. 8 to the Best Southwest Chamber of Commerce during a breakfast held at the Thorntree Country Club in Desoto.

Business and community leaders from the Best Southwest Partnership welcomed Marchant and also Commissioner Mayfield to speak at the Legislative Breakfast.

Marchant was interviewed by Carl Sherman of the Desoto City Council and addressed a variety of topics including energy, the economy, and transportation issues.

“America must invest in a sustained and systematic energy program that enhances our long-term economic health and security and also improves the environment,” said Marchant.  “To achieve these goals, Washington has to let go of the political divisiveness that impedes real progress.”

Marchant outlined a number of steps to become more energy independent.  “Long-term energy security requires investing in smart alternative fuel technologies, an active promotion of wind and solar energy, incentivizing conservation and renewable energy, and also exploring our own domestic natural resources.  America needs a comprehensive structural shift in our energy economy.”

Marchant, a long-time advocate of exploring fuel alternatives, stressed that America can not afford to become complacent if energy prices fall as they did after the 1973 Arab oil embargo.

After the interview, Marchant was presented with the Spirit of Enterprise Award.  The U.S. Chamber of Commerce awards the Spirit of Enterprise based on rankings it gives members of Congress for key business votes.

The event marked one of many speaking engagements in which Marchant has participated during the month of August in District 24.  Two of the four municipalities that consist of the Best Southwest Partnership, Cedar Hill and Duncanville, are represented by Marchant.
