Irving, TX – Firefighters from two different cities were honored by U.S. Congressman Kenny Marhcant (TX-24).  The Bedford Fire Department hosted their annual awards banquet on February 5 at the Texas Star located in Euless, and the Grapevine Fire Department hosted their annual awards banquet on February 6 at the Embassy Suites in Grapevine.

The Bedford Fire Department honored five firefighters for their outstanding service in 2009.  The firefighters honored were Jorge Sahagun as Rookie of the Year, George Smithwick as EMS Provider of the Year, Scott Brown as Officer of the Year, Russ Laurin as Firefighter of the Year, and Frank Tamayo Jr. as Outstanding Employee of the Year.

The Grapevine Fire Department honored six firefighters for their outstanding service in 2009.  The firefighters honored were Andrew Ecomedes as Driver-Engineer of the Year, Mark Ashmead as Administrative Employee of the Year, Sam Daniel as Rookie of the Year, Sheli Moss as EMS Provider of the Year, Mike Thompson as Officer of the Year, and Joshua Santiago as Firefighter of the Year.

In recognition for their service, each firefighter was awarded a certificate of congressional recognition.

“Our firefighters have taken it upon themselves to risk their well-being to save and protect the lives of our community members,” commented Marchant.   “In respect of their service, we need to take it upon ourselves to recognize the valor and diligence of our local firefighters.  I am honored to recognize these local heroes.”

Congressman Marchant often recognizes his district’s heroes, such as police officers, firefighters and paramedics, for their dedication and service to the community.
