Marchant Approves Line Item Veto

June 22, 2006

Washington, DC: Today Rep. Kenny Marchant (TX-24) reaffirmed his commitment to reducing federal spending by supporting the House-passed Legislative Line Item Veto Act of 2006.  The bill gives the president increased authority to remove unnecessary or wasteful spending items from spending bills.

"Federal spending has reached epidemic proportions," said Marchant.  "I am very encouraged by the passage of this bill; we now have a means to address this problem.  The line item veto provides a mechanism to bring control and transparency to the government spending process.

"Wasteful, unnecessary, and irresponsible Washington spending is on the way out."

The Legislative Line Item Veto Act allows the president 45 days to propose rescissions on spending bills he signs into law.  It requires Congress to approve the president's proposed rescissions with an up or down vote on the complete list.  Unlike previous attempts at a line item veto, this measure meets strict constitutional guidelines.

"The government cannot simply charge everything on a federal credit card for future generations to pay off," Marchant added.  "It is crucial, for the sake of our children and our grandchildren, that Americans? tax dollars are spent wisely and responsibly."
