Washington, DC - (Wednesday, November 15, 2006) - Today, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson announced that the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas has been awarded a $75 million contract through the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) for Gulf War Veterans’ Illnesses research.

The objective of the contract award is to ultimately improve the health of Gulf War Veterans that are ill due to their service. Under the contract, UT Southwestern Medical Center, in collaboration with a VA Medical Center, shall conduct and manage Gulf War Veterans’ Illnesses research projects in order to answer central questions on the nature, causes and treatments of Gulf War Veterans’ illnesses.

"I am delighted that the Department of Veterans Affairs has chosen to partner with one of the nation’s preeminent medical and research institutions to help our America’s veterans still plagued by illnesses associated with the Gulf War," stated Congresswoman Johnson. "The Medical Center is a leader in all areas of research, and I am confident that their efforts will yield great benefit to the overall health and well-being of our nation’s veterans."
