Congresswoman Gwen Moore’s statement on FY 2010 Budget

Washington, DC – Yesterday evening Congresswoman Gwen Moore spoke on the floor of the US House of Representatives during debate of the Concurrent Resolution on the Budget for FY 2010.  Here are excerpts from Rep. Moore’s prepared remarks:

“The Bush era’s misguided fiscal choices led to American families finding themselves in the midst of a recession as real income levels dramatically fell, more and more people lost their homes, and millions of families fell into poverty.

“The Budget Resolution before the House today is a strong starting point to reversing the trail of debt and financial crisis left behind by the Bush Legacy while making key investment in health care, energy independence, and education.

“This budget supports the President’s goal of reforming our current health care system by accommodating future legislation that would expand coverage, improve quality, and curb the associated rising costs.

“Today, the spread of inequality is astounding. More and more young people cannot afford to attend college, which means more people forced to take minimum wage jobs, more people receiving government assistance, and even more people falling into poverty.

“With the economy in its current state, there is nothing more important than making investments that help to jump start our ailing economic condition. This budget takes the needed steps to restore fiscal sustainability and restore the lives of those who have been most affected by the failed Bush policies.”
