(Washington, DC)— Congresswoman Gwen Moore, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and the Metropolitan Milwaukee Fair Housing Council today encouraged anyone that is at risk of losing their home to foreclosure to attend the confidential Milwaukee Foreclosure Prevention Event on August 6, 2009.

“We have people losing their homes and losing their sense of stability,” Congresswoman Moore said. “We’ve got to do what we can to turn that around. Rather than watch more foreclosure signs be plunked down on front yards in our neighborhoods, we need to get the word out to Milwaukee residents to reach out for help to find their way out of foreclosure. We can’t just stand idly by while families lose their homes – we need to give homeowners the tools to find another solution. The Milwaukee Foreclosure Prevention Event is free, and it will be a great way for homeowners to get help and information from lenders and housing counselors so that foreclosure is not their only option.”

“Losing your home through foreclosure is a horrible experience,” Mayor Barrett said. “It’s important for people who face foreclosure to know that there are individuals and agencies who have stepped forward to help.”

“It is essential to get accurate and helpful information to homeowners who are feeling the effects of the current housing market,” U.S. Senator Herb Kohl said. “This free event brings together lenders and housing counselors to answer questions on foreclosure prevention and offer guidance to those struggling to pay their mortgages.”

The Milwaukee Foreclosure Prevention Event is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 6th from 2 to 8 p.m. CST at the Bruce Guadalupe School, 920 S. Ninth Street. The event is free to the public and confidential. Representatives from different mortgage lenders will attend the event to hold face-to-face meetings with people worried about foreclosure. Nonprofit housing counselors will also attend to meet with people and coach them on what to discuss with their lender. People attending the event are asked to bring their loan number, most recent pay stubs and most recent statement from their lender. Borrowers will be assisted on a first-come, first-served basis.

To encourage those at risk to attend and to ensure that they receive confidential help, the event is closed to the media.

The event is sponsored by the City of Milwaukee, coordinated by the Metropolitan Milwaukee Fair Housing Council, and planned, promoted and implemented by Congresswoman Moore, Senator Kohl, Senator Russ Feingold, WHEDA, the FDIC, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Freddie Mac, the Helen Bader Foundation, the United Way, HUD, Housing Resources, Inc., Select Milwaukee, ACORN Housing, HBC Services, Ministry Enterprises, UEDA, Wells Fargo Bank, PNC Bank, Chase, US Bank, Guaranty Bank, M&I Bank, and a number of other lenders and non-profit organizations. Additional supporters include Marquette University and University of Wisconsin-Extension.
