(Washington, DC)— Congresswoman Gwen Moore (D-Wisc.) today made the following statement on the passing of Senator Ted Kennedy.
“Today, I feel more grateful than anything. I am grateful for the passion Senator Ted Kennedy brought to his life’s work – in civil rights, voting rights, the Family Leave Act, and his work on behalf of struggling working families, the poor and disabled -- which gave an untold number of Americans a real chance to live equitably in this country. Here is a man who had a life worth living, because despite his own considerable privilege, he lived to enrich the lives of so many everyday Americans.
“Senator Kennedy’s 47-year campaign for universal health care is so very emblematic of his fight for equality in this country. It is his career-long cause that we are finally taking up in the halls of Congress – his 47-year struggle for decent, affordable care for every American. To those who have said we are rushing through this debate – to those who have perpetuated the absurd argument that health care reform legislation is moving too quickly – it did not move quickly enough for Senator Kennedy to watch his own dream be realized. Let those naysayers be reminded of Senator Kennedy’s decades-long dream and his leadership. Let them think twice before repeating their spurious argument as they are reminded that it is his long-fought battle for universal health care that we carry out today.”
