(Washington, DC)— {Congresswoman Gwen Moore (D-Wisc.) today announced that Alverno College, Marquette University and the Medical College of Wisconsin will be receiving a combined total of $66,964 to expand the training of health professionals in the Milwaukee area. At Alverno and Marquette, these funds will go specifically toward a program that provides scholarships for disadvantaged students. This program funds health professions schools and training programs, and the schools then give financial aid to full-time health professions students. Those students who are able to demonstrate financial need are given priority. The Medical College of Wisconsin will use their funds for Public Health Traineeships, a program that funds schools of public health to support traineeships that pay tuition, fees and stipends for students in biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health, toxicology, nutrition or maternal and child health.
Alverno College, Marquette University and the Medical College of Wisconsin will receive $18,779, $24,143 and $24,042 respectively. Rep. Moore helped pass the Economic Recovery Act in February to create jobs, bolster the country’s infrastructure and improve the health of the economy.
“Making sure that students are able to afford an education in medicine or public health is critical to addressing the current shortages in the health care workforce and to improving America’s health outcomes,” Congresswoman Moore said. “We need to train students who are able to administer the important basic and preventative care services that will help Americans stay healthy. What’s more, we need to train them here in Milwaukee so that they will use their valuable degrees and skills at home. These funds will help give bright students an incentive to pursue degrees in the health professions, and help ensure that they don’t have to take out incredibly expensive loans that trap them in debt for years.”
“The Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students program is an important resource for our students, almost all of whom work part-time, often two part-time jobs, while attending Alverno,” said Kathleen O’Brien, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Alverno College. “These same students persist, graduate and stay to work in the Milwaukee area. With this increase of almost $19,000 in SDS funding, approximately 20 - 25 students will receive aid that will enable them to move more quickly to graduation. We would like to thank Congresswoman Moore and all her staff who helped Alverno obtain these funds.”
