Amount requested: $3,000,000 The funding will be used for research and development that integrates two types of batteries to improve operational performance and capability of military vehicles. One way to store electrical energy is with rechargeable batteries. A second technology incorporates electrochemical double layer capacitors (supercapacitors). The benefit of batteries is their ability to provide consistent power for long periods of time. Supercapacitors provide large pulses of power. By combining batteries with supercapacitors, it will be possible to develop “superbatteries.” Technological breakthroughs in this type of battery would be transformational to development of military hybrid vehicles and other military needs.
