The funding will support a green roof demonstration project that will serve as a learning lab for students at Chesterton Middle School. The project will include the installation of solar panels to demonstrate photovoltaic technology and help power the school. A second portion of the project will incorporate vegetation to demonstrate the conversion of carbon dioxide to oxygen and absorb rainwater to prevent excess run-off and flooding. Within the Department of Energy, the Building Technologies program is tasked to work in partnership with the private sector, state and local governments, national laboratories, and universities, to improve the efficiency of buildings and the equipment, components, and systems within them. This project is well suited to implement the program objectives through educational research and development activities.
