Montclair Art Museum - Project Support for the Special Exhibition “A Force for Change: African American Art and the Julius Rosenwald Fund”

Amount Requested: $166,500
The Montclair Art Museum (MAM) seeks $166,500 to help support expenses for the special exhibition “A Force for Change: African American Art and the Julius Rosenwald Fund”, a groundbreaking show that explores the process by which hundreds of the most promising and important black creative artists, scholars, and researchers in the United States received support for their work during the period from 1928 to 1948 to open in February 2010.  The presentation of this show is key to the Museum’s Diversity Initiative, specifically designed to help increase membership, attendance and involvement from African-American communities that surround the Museum through focus groups, a grass roots promotional plan, review of and recommendation on current publicity efforts, and a marketing audit analysis. Now in year three of the initiative the Museum is making great strides in extending our reach to serve more multicultural audiences by eliminating various barriers to participation, resulting in a visitor base that more accurately reflects the mixture of socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic demographics of our diverse region  Support for “A Force for Change” will enable the Museum to ingrain this initiative into the core of MAM and  contribute to the strengthening of our community.
