Washington, D.C. -- Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12) today released the following statement on President Bush’s announcement that he intends to deploy thousands of additional troops to Iraq:
“Let’s be clear: this is not a ‘surge,’ it’s an escalation of the war and it’s wrong on multiple levels. It’s morally wrong to send more soldiers and marines into an impossible predicament. It’s militarily wrong to persist in thinking that a military victory is just around the corner. It’s logistically wrong because we can’t find the troops for an increase without further extending both the duration and frequency of their combat tours. The right way forward is to set a date certain for the withdrawal of our combat forces and push the Iraqi government to reach a political settlement to end the country’s civil war.”
