Holt Calls for Resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales

Washington, D.C. --- Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12) today released the following statement on the emerging scandal regarding politically motivated firings of eight U.S. Attorneys around the country by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.  This most recent scandal comes on the heels of an FBI internal audit documenting widespread abuse of National Security Letters, and Department of Justice refusals to account for its lack of progress in prosecuting the 2001 anthrax attacks.

“Alberto Gonzales should resign.  The politically motivated firing of eight U.S. Attorneys reveals that Attorney General Gonzales still sees his role as President Bush’s personal lawyer, not our nation’s top law enforcement official.  He has enabled Members of Congress and political appointees in their inappropriate attempts to influence the actions of U.S. Attorneys and, failing that, to have them replaced.  The nation deserves better.

“Attorney General Gonzales repeatedly compared himself to a corporate CEO.  He and the White House have clearly botched their attempt at a hostile takeover of the independent judiciary, and he should take responsibility for that.
