House Administration Subcommittee Addresses Election Reform

Hearing Addresses Access for Voters with Disabilities, Software Disclosure

Washington, D.C. --- Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12) today commended House Administration Election Reform Subcommittee Chairwoman Zoe Lofgren for calling a hearing to address the manner in which Americans cast votes in federal elections, protecting access for voters with disabilities, and transparency of voting machines, software, and the vote-counting process.

“Americans must be confident that elections are conducted in a free and fair manner, and every voter deserves to be certain that his or her vote was counted as cast,” said Holt.  “Voting is the very foundation of our democracy, and I am pleased that the Committee on House Administration has begun its work so promptly to ensure that we are protecting the franchise.”

Holt also renewed his call for passage of the Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act of 2007, legislation to amend the Help America Vote Act of 2002 to require that electronic voting machines produce a voter-verified paper ballot that would become the ballot of record in the event of a recount or audit, to require software disclosure, and to mandate routine random audits.  It would also protect advances in accessibility for voters with disabilities achieved in HAVA.

“Anything of value should be auditable,” said Rep. Holt.  “I urge the House to act quickly to pass my legislation so that we can protect voters’ rights, ensure the accuracy of elections, and increase the confidence of Americans in our electoral system.”
