Washington, D.C. -- Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12), along with his colleague Rep. Mike Ferguson (NJ-07), today hosted a group of farm representatives for Holt’s annual “D.C. Day” for farmers.
“New Jersey is called ‘The Garden State’ for a reason,” said Holt. “Nearly 20% of our land is farmland, and there are 9,924 farms in the state. New Jersey ranks second in the nation in blueberry production, third in cranberries and peppers, and fourth in peaches. Agricultural policies decided in Washington have a very real impact here at home.”
Representatives of several New Jersey agricultural organizations were invited to the event, including the New Jersey Farm Bureau, the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Hunterdon County, the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County, the New Jersey Future Farmers of America Association, the New Jersey Northeast Organic Farming Association, the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, and the New Jersey Nursery and Landscape Association.
Participants in today’s event heard presentations from and asked questions of House Agriculture Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), House Agriculture Committee Ranking Member Rep. Collin Peterson (D-MN), a representative of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Ernest Shea, President, Natural Resources Solutions, who discussed the roles of industry and the federal government in developing energy from agriculture.
