HOLT STATEMENT ON BOEHNER STRATEGY
MEMO ON IRAQ FLOOR DEBATE

Washington, D.C. -- Rep. Rush Holt (D-NJ) today issued the following statement on House Majority Leader John Boehner’s “confidential messaging memo” on the pending Iraq floor debate:

“The Majority Leader’s strategy memo -- in which he claims that ‘Democrats…waver endlessly about the use of force to protect American ideals’ -- is symptomatic of what is wrong with the House today.  Instead of dealing honestly with how we got into Iraq and what we do to get out, the Majority Leader has resorted to baseless smears in a memo devoid of new ideas.

“We should use this debate to discuss how we, as a nation, decide to go to war, and how we end them.  It is the failure of this President and this Congress to answers these questions fully that has hurt us so severely in Iraq.

“Our country needs to change course in Iraq. The pending House debate on this historic issue -- without question the greatest moral and policy issue facing our nation today -- should be about how we change course for the benefit of Iraq and America…not how one party can score cheap political points.”
