HOLT TO ATTEND WHITE HOUSE BILL SIGNING CEREMONY FOR BURMA SANCTIONS LEGISLATION

Who: Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12) President George W. Bush First Lady Laura Bush Other Members of Congress
What: Rep. Holt will attend a bill signing ceremony for H.R. 3890, the Tom Lantos Block Burmese JADE (Junta's Anti-Democratic Efforts) Act of 2008. The law will block United States firms from importing Burmese gemstones and expand financial sanctions against Burma’s military regime. Holt was a cosponsor of the legislation and has been a strong supporter of human rights in Burma. Earlier this year, the House of Representatives passed Holt’s Congressional Resolution calling for the United Nations Security Council to not accept or recognize the state constitution, unilaterally written by the Burmese military junta, and the outcome of the May 10 constitutional referendum.
