West Windsor, NJ – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) today announced its 2008 National Environmental Scorecard, and U.S. Representative Rush Holt (NJ-12) received a 100 percent rating for the tenth time since he began representing Central New Jersey. Holt, a member of the Committee on Natural Resources, is one of the longest serving members of the House, along with Rep. Jim McGovern (MA-3), to earn a 100 percent lifetime rating from the LCV. Holt has been a leader in Congress in fighting for clean air and water, sustainable energy sources, and open space for recreation and preservation. He restored $150 million for the Land Water Conservation Fund, supported the first increase in fuel efficiency standards in 32 years, and helped lead the bipartisan effort to designate the Lower Delaware River a part of the nation’s Wild and Scenic River System.
“Protecting our natural resources for future generations has been and will remain one of my highest priorities as a Representative,” Holt said. I am honored that the League of Conservation Voters consistently has recognized my efforts to protect the environment. I will continue my work to reduce human causes of climate change, preserve open space, protect national parks, invest in alternative sources of energy, and expand public transportation systems across the country.”
The LCV report highlighted Holt’s leadership on alternative energy, including his support for alternative energy tax credits including credits that encourage individuals to purchase solar panels for their homes and encourage the production of wind energy. These renewable energy tax credits will create thousands of “green jobs” across the country, especially in New Jersey, which the country’s leader in solar energy industry. The report also cited his record preserving open space, specifically his vote on the National Landscape Conservation System Act, legislation that would protect permanently 26 million acres of land and waters managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
“LCV congratulates Representative Holt for maintaining a perfect 100 percent score throughout his tenure in Congress,” LCV President Gene Karpinski said. “In his time in Washington, Representative Holt has proven to be a leader in seeking solutions to our greatest energy challenges. We look forward to working with him to ensure that the next Congress finally passes vital legislation that tackles climate change and paves the way to a prosperous, clean energy future.”
