Washington, D.C. -- Today, Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12) issued the following statement regarding U.S. District Judge Clarence Brimmer’s ruling upholding the National Park Service rules limiting snowmobile use in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks .
“While I am pleased with this decision, it’s important to remember that these are not the final rules governing snowmobile use in our national parks. What we need is a final rule that truly protects the parks while still allowing meaningful access, and we already know that using snowcoaches and guided tours accomplish both goals.
“According to National Park Service statistics, the number of Yellowstone visitors choosing snowcoach tours has grown by 42 percent in the last two winters. The Park Service has concluded three separate times -- in 2000, 2003 and 2004 -- that replacing snowmobiles with snowcoach access provides the healthiest winter access to Yellowstone and the best protection of the Park's wildlife and environment. As the National Park Service moves forward in this process, I will continue to press for a final rule that institutionalizes this approach.”
