Leaving a Legal Legacy

For many years I have been working in Congress to secure funding and authorization for the new San Diego Federal Courthouse annex.  I was delighted about our groundbreaking last December, and I look forward to touring the new facility after its estimated completion date of January 2013.

The addition of this new work space should remind us of the increasing demands on our federal judiciary, particularly in one of the busiest border courts in the nation, and the enormous importance of its work to our country.

However, we must always remember that it’s not the bricks and mortar that make the court – it’s the judges and supporting staff inside. Delivering justice is hard and serious work.

As it is a Federal building, Congress has the ability to offer legislation to name the courthouse.  As the project moves through the construction phase, I want to reach out to you for your thoughts on the naming of the courthouse because I truly value your opinion and breadth of knowledge of the San Diego legal community.

I would like the courthouse’s name to be reflective of the discipline and integrity of the judges and staff of the Southern District while also honoring an individual who has created a legacy of passion for the role of law in our community and society.

If you would like to submit a recommendation, I ask that you submit your suggestions using the form below by October 1, 2010.

If you have additional supporting material you would like to share, this can be sent to SDCourthouse@mail.house.gov.  Please keep in mind that, with few exceptions, federal buildings, bridges and other structures are typically not named after officials who are still living.  In addition, while letters of support are helpful, all suggestions will be given equal consideration regardless of the number of recommendations.
