Rep. Susan Davis Praises Healthier School Menus

SAN DIEGO – Congresswoman Susan Davis joined San Diego Unified School District and the California Endowment as they unveiled new healthier school menus for the coming school year.  The new menus focus on fruits and vegetables, more whole grains and less fat.
“Healthy children learn better,” said Rep. Davis, who serves on the House Education and the Workforce Committee. “The increasing incidents of obesity among young people today are disturbing.  These guidelines will encourage healthier eating habits to help students and put us on a path toward ending obesity.”
In 2010, Congress and President Obama approved The Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act, which required the development of new federal guidelines for school meals. This was the first update to these guidelines in more than 15 years. The guidelines took effect July 1, 2012, in time for the 2012-13 school year.
Key changes for school meals include serving fruits and vegetables every day of the week, more whole grains, zero trans fats, less salt, milk that is fat-free or low-fat, free drinking water available with all meals, and portion sizes and calorie limits based on grade levels
The Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act also expands access to free school meals for children in need.  In California, approximately 55 percent of children are eligible for free or reduced-price meals subsidized by the federal government.
