Hot Topics Archive: Experiencing Passport Problems?
Please read the following important information:
Many of you are experiencing frustrating delays in getting your passports for family summer travel. The delays are caused by new post-September 11 requirements for flying abroad to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. This travel now requires a passport.
However, given the backlog this new rule has created, the Federal government has temporarily waived the passport requirement for travel to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda by September 30th.
Until the end of September, travelers will be allowed to fly without a passport if they present a State Department receipt, showing they had applied for a passport, and government-issued identification, such as a driver's license.
Travelers showing only receipts would receive additional security scrutiny, which could include extra questioning or bag checks.
If you are traveling, and would like to know that status of your passport or need help printing the receipt, call our district office at 503-326-2901 or 1-800-422-4003.
When you contact our office, we will need the following information:
- Traveler's full name
- Date of Departure
- Date of Birth
- Last four of Social Security number
- Contact information and address
**There is still no passport required for Americans driving across the Canadian or Mexican borders or taking sea cruises, although those travelers are expected to need passports under new rules beginning next year.
***Also, if you are traveling internationally and have yet to apply for a passport, please allow at least three months.
